Police remove protesters from Nadakkavu road

Kozhikode: The protest committee against the Avikkal sewage treatment plant here staged a demonstration in front of Nadakkavu police station on Monday for over an hour.

Following a clash with the police, four protesters were admitted to the Beach hospital here. 86 people were arrested in Nadakkavu and Kasaba police stations. A case has been registered against the protesters for hindering public transport.

Though the people in Avikkal protested against the construction of the sewage treatment plant, the construction works began under the security of the police. This urged the protesters to arrive in Nadakkavu by around 9.30 am and block the main road. Some of them were holding oars.

The roads were blocked at two points, near the school and church in Nadakkavu. Heavy traffic was experienced in Nadakkavu and adjacent roads due to this. Later, police arrested the protesters by 10.30 am and removed them from the roads. However, the protests continued even inside Nadakkavu station. Meanwhile, a few of them collapsed and a protester Suharabi (52) sustained an injury to the nose as she was hit with the shield while clearing the road. Suharabi (40), Haleema (50) and Hameed (65) are the others who are under treatment in the hospital.

Amid the protest, someone reportedly threw human waste on certain cops and fled away. Vellayil police have registered a case in connection to this. However, the protesters alleged that those who had attempted to quash the protest might be behind the attack on the police officers.
