Omemee and area residents have until the end of October to review and provide input on a recently completed study of the village’s wastewater plant.

The opportunity is part of a 30-day public review period that began Sept. 29.

The Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) study was undertaken to determine the preferred solution to address operational issues with the large sub-surface disposal system (LSSDS) at the Omemee Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 267 Beaver Rd. The City intends to operate the existing LSSDS at a reduced capacity and continue to run the existing spray irrigation system during the warm season. This will require process improvements for the lagoon effluent that goes to the LSSDS, including a Dissolved Air Flotation System in order to be reliable.

The study was carried out in accordance with the requirements for a Schedule “C” Municipal Class Environmental Assessment. The planning and decision-making process - including consultation with the public and review agencies, assessment of environmental impacts of alternative solutions, and identification of the preferred solution - has been completed.

The project report is currently available for online viewing at www.kawarthalakes.ca/en/news/resources/Omemee-ESR---Omemee-Wastewater-Pollution-Control.pdf or in person during normal business hours at the Omemee public library.

Those wishing more information or would like to provide comments are asked to contact either Juan Rojas at jrojas@kawarthalakes.ca or Tony Guerrera at tguerrera@greergalloway.com by Oct. 29.

In the event concerns are raised regarding this project and cannot be resolved in discussion with the City of Kawartha Lakes, a person/party may request that the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks make an order for the project to comply with Part II of the Environmental Assessment Act (referred to as a “Part II Order”), which would elevate the level of assessment and require the City to undertake additional consultation.

These requests must be received by the Minister David Piccini at 77 Wellesley St. W. 11th Floor, Toronto, ON, M7A 2T5 and the director of the environmental approvals branch at 135 St. Clair Ave. W., 1st Floor, Toronto, ON, M4V 1P5, by Oct. 29.

If no Part II Order requests are received by the deadline, the Class EA will be considered approved and the City may proceed with design and construction.
